Explanation of Construction Year
It has come to light through the municipal archive of Roderwolde that people have been living at Achtersteweg 6 since 1300. Therefore, the house is one of the oldest houses in Roderwolde. Around 1830, the church of Roderwolde was moved to its current location on Hoofdstraat, and the cemetery is located outside the village and can be seen from the back of the house. The then owner helped in tearing down the church that had been built with so-called convent mopps. He used these mopps to build his house. In the entrance hall, they can still be seen in the hallway and bathroom. Besides many whole stones, also a lot of half stones were used. At that time, materials were expensive and were recycled in this way to save money.
The cloister mops were from ‘De Kleibosch’ located at the edge of the stream valley of the Peizerdiep. It is a very wet forest, if you walk along the winding paths through the forest, you see remnants of old clay pits everywhere.
